If you are taking the SAT soon, here are some tips given by our tutors who have gotten PERFECT scores!
  1. Take every practice test seriously:
Understand each mistake you made is the key to improvement. Make sure that if you took the same practice test, you would get every question right.
  2. Identify your strengths and weaknesses: Don't waste time doing an entire practice test every time if you always excel at math and struggle on grammar. Focus on your weaknesses for maximum efficiency.
  3. Speak up and ask for help: Sometimes, self studying just doesn't work. Find a tutor that works for you!

If you need any help or advice studying, DM us to set up a consultation!

ACT ENGLISH AND SCIENCE TIPS

For any upcoming ACT test takers, here are some tips on the ENGLISH AND SCIENCE SECTION of the test! These tips come from our tutors, who have gotten perfect scores.

DM or email us if you would like to schedule a consultation to receive quality training from our tutors to help you score well on the ACT!
ACT english
  • Distinguish:
    • complete sentence vs sentence fragments: sentence fragments are usually missing a subject or verb
  • Transitions:
    • for transition word questions, look at the relationship between the two sentences that the transition word connects, look at transition phrases with questions about inserting sentences or changing topic/concluding sentences
  • Pace:
    • everyone has a different strategy for pacing, but here are some ideas:
    • Answer the questions quickly and check by doing the whole section again
    • Read the passages thoroughly as you answer the grammar questions so that you understand the main idea (there are usually  content questions at the end)
  • Find patterns:
    • repetition or redundancy problems: the right answer is usually the shortest one
    • Comma splices: instead, use a period, semicolon, or a comma with a conjunction
    • Dashes have to be paired when isolating a clause at the middle of the sentence
ACT science
  • Tip #1:
    • Read the prompt, make sure you understand what the data represents, and if there are more than one experiment with variable manipulations. Make sure you can easily differentiate which is which
  • Tip #2:
    • One science passage usually provides 3 or 4 student perspectives on some topic, and you have to analyze their differences and similarities and their relation to the data, so highlight or annotate key points of each perspective in order to not have to read the entire perspective every time you get a question about it.

SAT VS ACT?

12/4/2022

Not sure which test to take? Not only do we have amazing tutors for both tests, but here are the key differences to help you decide!
  1. Timing - The sat typically gives you more time per question. If you would like to speed through things, the ACT is for you
  2. English and grammar - The SAT grammar section tends to be harder than the ACT sections may want to take the SAT if you are good at evidence based questions.
  3. Reading - The ACT is for you if you are a fast reader or detail oriented!
  4. Math - The ACT tends to have more geometry, allows a calculator the whole time, and is all multiple choice. The SAT tends to have more algebra, has no calculator section, and has some free response questions.
  5. Science - If you do not like science, the SAT is for you, since there is no science section. In addition to graphs and concepts, the ACT’s science section requires a fair amount of reading comprehension.
If you are interested in coaching for either test, DM or email us to set up a consultation with one of our tutors!
