ACT english
  • Distinguish:
    • complete sentence vs sentence fragments: sentence fragments are usually missing a subject or verb
  • Transitions:
    • for transition word questions, look at the relationship between the two sentences that the transition word connects, look at transition phrases with questions about inserting sentences or changing topic/concluding sentences
  • Pace:
    • everyone has a different strategy for pacing, but here are some ideas:
    • Answer the questions quickly and check by doing the whole section again
    • Read the passages thoroughly as you answer the grammar questions so that you understand the main idea (there are usually  content questions at the end)
  • Find patterns:
    • repetition or redundancy problems: the right answer is usually the shortest one
    • Comma splices: instead, use a period, semicolon, or a comma with a conjunction
    • Dashes have to be paired when isolating a clause at the middle of the sentence
ACT science
  • Tip #1:
    • Read the prompt, make sure you understand what the data represents, and if there are more than one experiment with variable manipulations. Make sure you can easily differentiate which is which
  • Tip #2:
    • One science passage usually provides 3 or 4 student perspectives on some topic, and you have to analyze their differences and similarities and their relation to the data, so highlight or annotate key points of each perspective in order to not have to read the entire perspective every time you get a question about it.
